The Wrap

Jess here - finally getting around to posting like Steve promised :)

The fabric is 100% cotton gauze. Anything 100% cotton will work, but I like the gauze because it's really nice and cool. Don't be tempted by the cotton blends at the fabric store - you want something that is breathable because your baby's head is going to be tucked down inside of it at times.

So basically you get 5 yards of whatever 100% cotton fabric you want and cut it in half long ways. The wrap should be between 20" and 30" wide (mine is 27" wide). You may want to mark the middle of the wrap somehow with a ribbon or something, but you don't have to. You also don't HAVE to sew it, but I like it much better sewn than raw edged.

My favorite how to websites are:
http://www.mamatoto.org/Default.aspx?tabid=121
and
http://www.rookiemoms.com/wrap-your-baby-and-stay-warm/

20" is a little too narrow for my liking. If you want to attempt some of the more advanced back carries it will need to be at least 25" wide.

Now for the wrapping instructions. It seems difficult at first but it's really no different than tying a tie - once you do it a couple of times it comes very naturally.

My most used carry:

I put on the wrap before I leave the house and when I get to Target (let's be honest, that's where I'm usually going) I unsnap him from his car seat and slip him in (with the pacifier clipped on to the top strap)

A good wrap, he's nice and high

mmmmm drool

I also use this one, but I don't like it nearly as much because I can't see his face and I feel like he's really vulnerable to outside hands (while at Target ;)).

He's just so cute!

Quick tips:
  • Keep the baby high
  • Spread the fabric, and when you think it's good, spread it some more!
  • Keep all of the fabric flat with no twists. If there are twists it will "pull" and be uncomfortable
  • You can tie at your back or wrap it one more time and tie it at your stomache
  • His knees should always be higher than his butt (when facing in).
  • To nurse you can follow the instructions on the Moby site for the cradle hold, or I prefer to nurse in the Hug Hold with him sitting upright (this also can be done in Target!).
  • If it isn't comfortable, keep trying.

hey im excited about using mine. I used it in walmart the other day for over an hour and with my weak back I did alright! I didn't get him high and tight enough so after an hour he needed to be re'tied. But we are working on it. It's very handy. I can not nurse tho with him in it. (we all come in different shapes and sizes!) and I think mine prevents me from doing so..
But very excited you got me started on this :) - Shelley
